Join your family physician colleagues from the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians for a 2-part series on incorporating MOUD (Medications for treating Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)) into your practice. OUD is one of many chronic disease states that family physicians expertly manage. The first session will provide a didactic and case-based learning opportunity. The second session will include small group peer-to-peer virtual learning. Those interested in additional T2P (Translation to Practice)- prescribed credits can participate in a simple implementation project between sessions (and you might even choose to develop it into a custom Part IV ABFM project!).

Learning Objectives:
1. Recite one positive and one negative aspect of each of the three medications for treating Opioid Use Disorder (OUD).
2. Present one factor that would influence your choice of buprenorphine initiation methods in your current practice setting.
3. Describe one barrier to providing OUD treatment in a Family Medicine setting and how it might be overcome.

Session 2 is scheduled for Tuesday, December 1, 2026, at 12:00 PM (CT). 

List of Possible T2P Projects (choose one):

1. Propose an office workflow to routinely prescribe naloxone to all patients who use drugs, who have a family member who uses drugs, or are prescribed opioids
2. Review Substance Use Disorder screening questions used in your EMR/practice and assess how often they are used in a sample week
3. Review the steps of SBIRT and utilize the techniques with two patients who screen positive for problematic substance use
4. At a staff meeting, discuss implementing non-stigmatizing language (for SUDs) in your practice's spoken and written language
5. Initiate a tapering discussion with two current patients who are chronically prescribed opioids or benzodiazepines
6. Attend an Academic Detailing session with the UIC Advance program and choose one customized action to implement in your practice
7. Evaluate your office's "Universal Precautions" for Controlled Substance Prescribing policies and practice
8. If you do not currently have any patients on buprenorphine, investigate how you can assume comprehensive care for one stable patient and write your first buprenorphine prescription
9. Ask an addiction provider in your locality for one idea to implement in your practice
10. Other ideas that are sparked by the first session
