State Mandated CME

CME Requirements

Physicians in Illinois must earn 150 hours of continuing medical education in a three-year licensure period. Licenses are renewed through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Physicians must complete CME in the following topic areas as part of their 150 hours of continuing medical education in a three-year licensure period. The special requirements below count towards the 150 hours of continuing education that is required for licensure renewal.

  • Opioid Safe Prescribing (3-hours)
  • Sexual Harassment Prevention (1-hour)
  • Recognizing Dementia (1-hour)
  • Recognizing Implicit Bias in Healthcare (1-hour)

Safe Opioid Safe Prescribing

The 3-hour education requirement for safe opioid prescribing applies to all licensed healthcare professionals holding an Illinois Controlled Substance License. This includes faculty, advanced practice providers, and current GME trainees renewing their licenses.

Implicit Bias

Recognizing Implicit Bias in Healthcare All licensed healthcare professionals must complete this 1-hour training on recognizing implicit bias in healthcare.

Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse

Illinois law requires physicians who treat children to complete one hour of continuing education on identifying and reporting child abuse every six years. Mandated reporters, including medical professionals, must also undergo initial and periodic training on child abuse recognition and reporting, including a section on implicit bias. You can find more details and access the required training through the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) here (325 ILCS 5/4).
