Non-Dues Revenue

IAFP adheres to the following policy and multi-step process on non-dues revenue transparency.

Funding for CME activities

As a chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians and as an organization that is certified by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, IAFP adheres to the following policies on source and use of funding intended for CME purposes:

• AAFP CME rules and policies

• Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, rules and policies

Funding for non-CME activities

For non-dues revenues received, that are not intended for use in CME events, IAFP adheres to the Code for Interaction with Companies by the Council on Medical Specialty Societies. Furthermore, the following three levels of risk will apply in reviewing potential sources of non-dues funding:
1. Low risk – funding from the public domain or the family of family medicine – such as federal, state and local government, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Board of Family Medicine, American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
2. Medium risk – funding from non-profit organizations – such as Alzheimer’s Association, Health Care Associates Credit Union.
3. High risk* – funding from for-profit organizations or non-profit organizations that may stand to profit from the activities IAFP undertakes with the funding they provide. – such as pharmaceutical companies, health plans and US Department of Agriculture Commodity Check Off Programs (for example, Dairy Council and Egg Board) *Funds from high risk sources will be reviewed by a board task force. All funds received are reported to the board quarterly.

Substantial funding from one source
For any non-dues revenues from one source, in the amount of $50,000 or more, the IAFP Executive Committee will review source of funds and plans for use of those funds.

Reporting to members
Transparency to members so they can assess the potential conflict of interest for any activity funded from outside sources, requires disclosure.
For each program or activity supported by funding from outside sources, the names of the sources and the amounts provided will be displayed.
For CME activities, this information is typically displayed in a disclosure form (such as one slide in a presentation, or a footnote in a document, webpage, or other enduring material).
