Full Scope Rural Medicine Experience
The student extern will gain experience in all that makes full-scope family medicine so fantastic! Learn how a family medicine physician can do it all for the families in their community. This externship experience encompasses prenatal care, labor and delivery (including cesarean sections), pediatrics, and many other opportunities to provide comprehensive high quality care in rural Illinois. You'll work with past IAFP board member Kristina Dakis, MD in Gibson City, Illinois. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in caring for rural communities and closing gaps in access to care for rural residents. You'll also get a glimpse of family medicine's leadership role in the community, especially with advocacy for patient access, public health and reproductive health.

Dates, hours and expectations
This externship must cover four total weeks, even if they are not four consecutive weeks - with flexible scheduling by agreement between the selected student and preceptor Kristina Dakis, MD. Please be specific on your application about your available weeks in the summer. Student will be encouraged to join an IAFP Member Interest group such as Health Equity or Family Physicians Who Deliver Babies.
Location
This externship is at Gibson City Clinic with lead preceptor Dr. Dakis. It will also include visits to Gibson Area Hospital, with other potential learning opportunities depending on student interest. We encourage you to learn more about the clinic and hospital system before you apply, using the links above. Housing will be provided for the selected student, if needed. It is highly recommended that the student have their own car to maximize the flexibility of scheduling, participation in deliveries and other clinic opportunities.
