The student extern will gain exposure to how FQHCs operate and play a vital role in the community. The student will engage in clinical experiences, with a focus on primary care integration of services (Medical and Behavioral Health) and clinical administration. Clinical shadowing of a provider will be offered. The goals of the externship are to foster an introduction to primary care medicine, interest in systems of care for underserved populations, and leadership growth.
Dates, hours and expectations
This externship must cover four total weeks, and those weeks do not have to be consecutive if a vacation week is already scheduled. May start as early as June 1 and go through the end of August. It will be important to work out a schedule with Dr. Wells in May to ensure there is enough time to coordinate the four weeks.
Location
This externship is at UI-Mile Square Health Center Cicero location with lead preceptor Christina Wells, MD. Dr. Wells is chair of the Lifestyle Medicine Member Interest Group and was elected to the IAFP Board of Directors in 2020. We encourage you to learn more about the clinic before you apply, using the link for UI-Mile Square above. Some work may be self-directed or include other Mile Square clinical sites.
